Scrabble is a very popular crossword game in America. My parents are avid players and whenever I’m back home to visit, we always find time for a game. I’ve played it here in Japan, mostly with my adult students. It’s not such a hard game to make words in English, but it’s more “luck of the draw”. You play by choosing seven letters from a bag. Your goal is to make big words for big points. It takes some time to play because everyone needs time to think of not only a word, but where to place it on the playing board. Tonight 2 out of my 3 junior high school students were absent, so I was left with only one student. She’s an upper level student who has been studying with us since elementary school. I thought it would be a perfect opportunity to play Scrabble with her. I knew I could challenge her in a way to make her think in English and use the words that she knows. She did an amazing job and scored over 200 points mostly on her own. I’d say that’s pretty good for her first time!
